Ripping out a kitchen, bathroom or garden patio? Two common ways to deal with debris are a licensed “man & van” waste collection (that’s us) or hiring a skip. This guide compares costs, time and practicalities so you can choose the best option for your project.

Quick answer

  • Smaller, fast jobs (1–3 cubic yards; a few bulky items, bagged rubble, timber off-cuts): Man & Van is usually cheaper and quicker because labour is included and you only pay for what we load.
  • Longer projects where waste builds up over days and you’ve got off-road space: a skip can make sense for on-going disposal—provided you don’t need a road permit.

How much space is your waste?

Rough volume Typical example Best value option
1–2 yd³ Old bathroom suite, a few bags of rubble/tiles Man & Van (you pay only for what we take; labour included)
3–4 yd³ Small kitchen rip-out, timber & packaging Man & Van or 4-yd “midi” skip (depends on labour/access)
6–8 yd³ Multiple rooms, steady waste over a week Skip (if you have driveway space & no permit needed)

Cost factors to consider

  • Labour – Our Man & Van service includes lifting/loading. With a skip, you load it yourself (or pay extra help).
  • Permits – On-road skips usually need a council permit and sometimes safety lights/cones, adding cost and admin. Driveway skips avoid permits.
  • Access & parking – Tight streets, flats or limited parking favour Man & Van; we arrive, load and go.
  • Project duration – If waste accumulates over several days, a skip can suit—otherwise a single uplift is often cheaper.
  • Waste type – Heavy waste (soil, rubble) can limit skip size to 6–8 yd “builder’s” due to weight. We can collect bagged rubble/soil—just tell us volume/weight.

Skip sizes (for context)

  • 2–3 yd “mini” – small DIY jobs
  • 4 yd “midi” – bathrooms/smaller kitchens
  • 6 yd “builder’s” – heavier waste; common choice
  • 8 yd “builder’s” – larger clearances (level load only)

Note: many councils/skip firms restrict plasterboard and heavy inert loads. Keep plasterboard separate from mixed waste for compliance.

What LSI takes for builder’s/renovation waste

  • Rubble, bricks, concrete, tiles, soil (bagged where possible)
  • Timber, doors, skirting, kitchen carcasses, worktops
  • Sanitaryware (toilets, sinks, baths), radiators (drained)
  • Packaging, cardboard, plastics, insulation off-cuts

Items we can’t take

We cannot collect asbestos, gas cylinders, fuels/oils, paints/solvents, clinical/biological waste, explosives/fireworks or other hazardous materials. Unsure? Ask us for advice.
